Polymer Adhesion: Seeking New Solutions for an Old Problem

چکیده
Polymer adhesion is ubiquitous in both the natural world and human technology. It also a complex multiscale phenomenon, such that solution of problems requires convergence chemistry, physics, engineering. In this Perspective, we provide an overview some fundamental concepts have emerged field polymer adhesion, discuss recent work, identify challenges three specific areas: (a) theories simulations, with emphasis on involving chain scission; (b) experimental methods for measuring forces characterizing interfaces at molecular scale; (c) strategies inspired by living organisms to generate underwater adhesion.

Anchoring : do we need new solutions to an old problem or do we have old solutions for a new problem ?
We propose a model to represent knowledge in an agent possibly participating to a multi-agent system, such that the anchoring problem can be faced by well known techniques. We discuss how this model could reliably support the instantiation of concepts by aggregating percepts affected by uncertainty, sensed by several sensors, and obtained from different agents.
متن کاملPostoperative atrial fibrillation: an old problem crying for new solutions.
I n this issue of the Journal, Mueller and colleagues1 report on their experience with postoperative atrial arrhythmias in a series of 183 patients who underwent isolated single coronary artery bypass grafting (CABG) with the left internal thoracic artery placed to the left anterior descending coronary artery. The authors observed that the prevalence of postoperative atrial arrhythmias was simi...
متن کاملAxillary Versus Femoral Arterial Cannulation During Repair of Type A Aortic Dissection?: An Old Problem Seeking New Solutions.
BACKGROUND The goal of this study was to compare early postoperative outcomes and actuarial-free survival between patients who underwent repair of acute Type A aortic dissection with axillary or femoral artery cannulation. METHODS A total of 305 patients from five academic medical centers underwent acute Type A aortic dissection repair via axillary (n = 107) or femoral (n = 198) artery cannul...
متن کاملA new tool for an old problem
Cancer is characterized by somatic mutations that provide a growth and survival advantage. The mutations are a function of chance because of the random nature of mutagenesis. However, the biology in the tumor cells drives the selection of mutations that are advantageous to the cancer. 1 in addition, the tumor environment exerts a selective pressure on the tumor. For example, the hypoxic environ...
متن کاملHaemodialysis adequacy monitoring for phosphate: an old problem with new solutions?
Effective clearance of inorganic phosphate (Pi) is more variable between dialysis treatments done in the same patient than that of the classic albeit non-toxic solute urea. This is the result of a detailed study by Debowska et al. [1] published in this issue of NDT where the amount of solute removed and the corresponding concentration profile were measured during intraand inter-dialytic phases ...
